mahenge water project
This project has been very challenging as it is in a very rural area and far from Arusha area. We have done a couple of small projects in this area but none as large as this before. Prior to the project getting the go-ahead, a trustee visited the village. It took five days to get there and back and it was in the rainy season which made travel difficult. The only bridge over the river collapsed under the weight of the drilling machine and the community had to rebuild before we could get on site but we succeeded. The project necessitated drilling a borehole so work had already been done to know where water could be found in this dusty and barren area. It is being run at present by generator however we are looking at solar as it is proving a little expensive in fuel. Electricity is not really an option as in rural areas it is very often not working so solar would offer the best option. We are currently awaiting some quotations as the initial project came in a little under budget so we may have the option of changing to solar without much more outlay. This village is where we bought pigs and built styes to give the women an income and they now pay for their children's schooling which is great because the children are no longer kept from going to school.
