Six village health programme in Makayuni region

Now completed with another three requests for programmes to be delivered when funds allow.

We are really happy that we have been able to secure funds for this project to go ahead, especially in this year where donations have really been depleted due to Covid-19.  It is even more precious as it indicates what we are doing with all our projects, in that we start them and then let the communities take ownership and take them forward.  In this case, one of our doctors that was sponsored through his studies, through our charity, has now developed this programme for us to take what he has learned out into the Masai areas that have no health provision close to them.  We have three doctors in the field and a driver who are visiting six villages across three weeks.  The area is very rural, children at present walk 15kms to school through land which has wild animals roaming.  Just before we started this project there was a report of an attack.

This programme is taking basic first aid such as bleeding, fever, diarrhoea and vomiting, snake bites, emergency aid so that the community know what the can do until they can get hospital/doctor assistance and also consultations and testing for blood pressure, blood glucose, BMI and HIV/AIDS tests.  It is also delivering sessions about Female Genital Mutilation, early marriage and early pregnancy. This programme is linked into a hospital in the Arusha region so that residents are signposted to further assistance if required.

This programme does not come without challenges such as communication, facilities, weather, it's planting season so when its dry we have to engage with communities to take the time out, however we are very grateful for their reception.  The leaders are very pleased to have the provision for the communities.  We will also be visiting schools to teach the children and to tackle things like bullying.

This has been a real team effort, especially as Louise has not been able to be in Tanzania due to Covid-19.  We also must thank Rotary clubs of Blaby (of which Louise is a member), Rotary Club of Hinckley Ambion and Rotary Club of Lutterworth Wyclifffe who have supported this project as well as the generosity of the Rotary District grant.

Please look at the gallery to see photographs and videos from the programme.
